From 6th to 13th March 2025, five enthusiastic young people from North Macedonia, all just 18 years old, embarked on their first-ever international journey as part of the DiscoverEU: From East to West project. This incredible adventure took them through Bulgaria and Romania, two culturally rich and vibrant countries in Eastern Europe. For most of the participants, it was their very first time traveling by train and using a metro system, adding even more excitement to the journey.

Their adventure began in Sofia, the dynamic capital of Bulgaria. The group was instantly impressed by the city’s blend of history and modern life. They visited key landmarks such as the majestic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, admired the city’s historic streets, and enjoyed strolling through its buzzing central squares. Riding the metro for the first time was a memorable moment because participants were amazed by how modern, clean, and efficient Sofia’s metro system is, making it easy to explore the city like locals.

Crossing into Romania, their next stop was Bucharest. A major highlight of the trip was a guided one-hour tour of the Palace of the Parliament a jaw-dropping experience. The sheer size and opulence of the world’s heaviest building left the participants speechless. They also explored the city’s lively boulevards, cozy cafés, and historical neighborhoods.

The journey continued to Brașov, a beautiful city nestled in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains. Here, participants wandered through the medieval Old Town, visited the iconic Black Church, and took in the breathtaking mountain scenery that surrounds the city.

Next, the group traveled to Ruse, a charming town on the banks of the Danube River. Known for its beautiful neo-baroque and neoclassical architecture, Ruse offered a peaceful contrast to the energy of the capital. Participants enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere and picturesque views.

Throughout the journey, the young travelers had many chances to connect with locals, taste delicious traditional dishes, and learn about the rich cultural diversity of Bulgaria and Romania. These meaningful encounters, combined with first-time travel experiences, made this activity truly unforgettable.

The EAST journey of the DiscoverEU: From East to West project didn’t just take them to new places, it opened minds, sparked curiosity, and inspired intercultural understanding. It was a celebration of youth, mobility, and European unity.
