From 22nd to 29th March 2025, five excited young people from North Macedonia, all 18 years old, had the unforgettable opportunity to explore the beauty and culture of Italy through the DiscoverEU: From East to West project. This WEST activity was filled with first-time experiences, deep cultural immersion, and lots of Italian charm.

The journey began with a thrilling ferry ride from Durrës, Albania to Bari, Italy. For all of the participants, this was their very first time on a ferry, making the overnight journey across the Adriatic Sea a unique and exciting start to the adventure. Arriving in Bari, they were welcomed by warm coastal views and the relaxed atmosphere of Southern Italy.

From Bari, they visited the stunning seaside town of Polignano a Mare, famous for its dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and charming old streets. It was the perfect place to soak in the beauty of the Adriatic coast and enjoy the calm pace of Italian coastal life.

The adventure continued by train—another first-time experience for the group—as they made their way to the heart of Italy: Rome. In the capital, participants explored iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and Piazza Venezia. A visit to the Vatican City gave them the chance to admire St. Peter’s Basilica and learn about the spiritual and cultural significance of this tiny country within a city.

Next on the itinerary was Napoli (Naples)—the birthplace of pizza. Besides exploring this vibrant and historic city, the group had a delicious experience visiting the oldest pizzeria in Naples, where they tasted traditional Neapolitan pizza straight from the source. Of course, the Italian experience wouldn’t be complete without enjoying local dishes like fresh pasta, creamy gelato, and countless slices of pizza.

Throughout the trip, participants used local metro and train systems, met and spoke with locals, and embraced every opportunity to experience Italian culture first-hand. For many, this was a life-changing journey filled with personal growth, independence, and connection.

The WEST journey of DiscoverEU: From East to West offered these young people not only the chance to travel but to truly experience Europe in all its diversity. It strengthened their curiosity, confidence, and understanding of different ways of life—values at the heart of the Erasmus+ DiscoverEU initiative.
